What we do

An alternative data engine, and two advisory practices.

The alternative data engine is the core of the firm. Board and risk advisory draw on the same experience and on the regulatory data the engine produces.

Alternative Data Engine

“What is happening in a market before it shows up in filings and prices?”

An engine that builds datasets standard feeds miss, for hedge funds, asset managers, banks and institutional research teams. Japan is the first market; the engine is built to extend to any market and any dataset type.

Much of what moves companies is published in local languages, scattered across fragmented sources, or never collected at all. The engine runs every dataset through the same five stages: discover, acquire, structure, validate and deliver. Collection and data infrastructure are built with our technology partner Context Plus, through Context Labs. Sourcing, validation and the client relationship stay with Fractales Ventures.

Deliverables
  • Alternative datasets: hiring, store openings, prices, footfall, web activity
  • Regulatory and legal datasets: filings, enforcement, rule changes
  • Risk datasets: sanctions, corporate events, cyber incidents
  • Documentation of sources, method, coverage and gaps
  • Bespoke research briefs on a dataset or signal
How to engage

Start with a scoped data pilot built around one question. Recurring feeds and licences follow once a pilot has proved its value.

Illustrative format · What a data pilot includes
  1. The investment question and the signal that could answer it
  2. Sources, collection method and legal basis
  3. A defined history and coverage, delivered in an agreed format
  4. Validation results and known gaps
  5. A short note on how the data behaves and what it cannot show

A sample outline, not a client deliverable. Scope is agreed per pilot.

Board & Governance

“Is our board equipped to oversee AI, cyber and compliance risk?”

Board advisory and external directorships for companies, investors and data businesses.

Boards everywhere, and in Japan especially, are expected to bring in more independent perspective, and to oversee risks that move faster than annual reviews: AI adoption, cyber threats and regulatory change. We bring operating experience as a managing director of financial data and legal information businesses in North Asia, and work with boards and CEOs on the decisions in front of them.

Deliverables
  • External and advisory board roles
  • Board risk reviews on AI, cyber and compliance oversight
  • Advisory sessions and decision memos
  • Support for information and data businesses entering or growing in Japan and Asia-Pacific
How to engage

Advisory session, board risk review, or an advisory or directorship appointment agreed with the board.

Directorships are subject to each company's own appointment process, independence criteria and conflict checks.

Risk, Compliance & Legal Operations

“How do we make compliance work every day, not only at audit time?”

Practical compliance, legal operations and risk governance for general counsel, compliance and risk leaders.

We design the processes that keep an organisation compliant: monitoring regulatory change, screening counterparts, managing approvals and evidence, and governing the use of AI. The regulatory and legal data from FV 01 feeds directly into this work. Technical cyber security is delivered with a specialist partner, and legal questions are referred to qualified lawyers.

Deliverables
  • Compliance programme and monitoring workflow design
  • Counterparty and third-party screening processes
  • Legal operations and legal technology workflows
  • AI governance frameworks and policies
  • Cyber risk governance, with a technical partner
How to engage

Start with a compliance workflow diagnostic, followed by a scoped implementation project.

What we do not do

Clear limits, stated up front.

We do not provide legal advice, audit services, investment advice or regulated financial services, and we do not guarantee compliance. Where a matter needs a licensed lawyer (bengoshi), auditor or other specialist, we say so and work alongside the professionals you appoint.

Datasets are information products. Investment decisions made with them remain the client's own.

Tell us what you need to know.

A short note is enough to start. We reply with a view on whether and how we can help, and what a first step would involve.
